About Our Scholarships

The purpose of our scholarships is to assist college students with attaining their higher education while promoting leadership in the Long Beach community through literary, educational, and charitable activities. Through our scholarships, L.B.L.G.P., Inc. encourages unity by word and action to all individuals while working towards one common goal - to instill pride in the lesbian and gay community.

Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc. (L.B.L.G.P., Inc.) consists of an all volunteer board of directors, extended and associate members and two paid staff. For over 20 years L.B.L.G.P., Inc.'s primary work has been to produce the annual Pride Celebration held each May. The Celebration consists of Pre-festival Activities, a Two-day Festival, and a Parade. It is the largest event held in the City of Long Beach and serves as a catalyst for hundreds of organizations and ten-of-thousands of individuals to network, support one another, educate, and disseminate information.

Pride Scholarships: The purpose of this scholarship is to assist individuals with attaining their higher education while promoting leadership in the Long Beach community through literary, educational, and charitable activities. This annual scholarship targets full-time students either residing in Long Beach or attending an accredited higher education facility located in Long Beach. Through this scholarship L.B.L.G.P., Inc. encourages unity by word and action to all individuals while working toward one common goal-to instill pride in the lesbian and gay community. L.B.L.G.P., Inc.

Pride Youth Scholarship: This newly developed program (2004) is similar to the Pride Scholarship program only it targets college-bound graduating high school seniors.

Pre-Sale Ticket Donations: Each year L.B.L.G.P., Inc. gives away over 150 - 200 festival entrance tickets to local HIV and AIDS organizations to give away to their clients. Each year, this expenditure is approved by a vote of the board of directors.

Charitable Activities: L.B.L.G.P., Inc. members take part in activities year-round that may not always include cash donations but would include volunteer hours and resources held by L.B.L.G.P., Inc. Such activities include: Annual Toy Drive, Annual Can Food Drive, Long Beach Aids Walk promenade booth and walking team, NCCJ Annual Walk for Life, staffing a Long Beach Marathon water station, Serving as Color Guard for several banquets throughout the year- Imperial Court of Greater Long Beach, Royal Court de Santa Monica, Imperial Court of Los Angeles, Volunteer at several key areas at various other Pride Celebrations including Los Angeles Pride/CSW, Latino Pride, Arizona Pride, Las Vegas Pride, Palm Springs Pride, Leadership Long Beach annual project -L.B.L.G.P., Inc. regularly has members enrolled in this annual city leadership training project.

 

About Our Grants

The money generated from our celebration serves as the primary income producer for various Grant programs and public benefit opportunities throughout the year. The applications for Grants can be found under the FORMS tab above.

Our Grant programs include the following:

Pride Week Sponsorships: L.B.L.G.P., Inc. grants money to not-for-profit organizations in the Long Beach community to produce a variety of educational and cultural activities that fall within L.B.L.G.P., Inc.'s mission statement and within two-weeks prior to the annual festival in May. Non-profit organizations receive free publicity as well as cash funds.

Volunteer Grants: An individual or group may assist with the production of the annual celebration and earn an hourly stipend to be granted to the non-profit organization of their choice. Over 85 organizations benefited from this type of giving in 2004.

Pride Grants: Non-profit organizations may apply annually for Pride Grants through a formal grant process. L.B.L.G.P., Inc. supports a variety of organizations that work to promote charitable activities, educational programs, and cultural arts in Long Beach and surrounding communities. Funding priorities include Health and Wellness, HIV/AIDS & STDs, Cultural Arts, Social & Human Services and Social Justice/Human Rights programs that fall in line with the organizations' mission statement.

Community Grants: L.B.L.G.P., Inc. supports non-profit organizations throughout Long Beach and surrounding cities by sponsoring and attending various fundraisers, conferences, educational and cultural events throughout the year. On several occasions L.B.L.G.P., Inc. is asked to assist in producing the event through various volunteer opportunities. L.B.L.G.P., Inc. and its members attend over 25 events annually.

Pre-Sale Ticket Designated Grants: Each year L.B.L.G.P., Inc. contracts with agencies throughout Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Riverside counties to sell presale festival entrance tickets. L.B.L.G.P., Inc. donates one dollar for every ticket sold to an approved non-profit organization of the contracted agencies' choice.

Pride Book Grant: L.B.L.G.P., Inc. strives to give funds to local educational organizations or facilities (Long Beach) for purchase of books or educational materials. L.B.L.G.P., Inc. has given money to local public libraries, grammar schools, OASIS High School, and the Long Beach Gay & Lesbian Center library.
